How to Know If the Teak Is Real

24th Nov 2016

In our last blog, we discussed teak’s rich history. It has long been coveted for its superior color, texture, waterproofness, and durability.

  • As with any in-demand material, there are people who sell fake teak to consumers who don’t know better. At AquaTeak, we sustainably produce authentic teak products in Indonesia, being careful to inspect everything along the way. Unfortunately, not everyone shares our dedication to excellence, and many furniture-buyers have been tricked by particle board coated to look like teak.
  • In today’s blog, we are going to share characteristics that are uniquely “teak.” Fake products will do their best to mimic these characteristics, but they can’t capture them exactly.

Color

  • We’re starting with color because it is the touchiest. It’s not only changeable according to the type of stain a carpenter uses, it varies depending on the type of tree and its physical location within the tree itself. Here are some major color markers:
  • The most expensive teak comes from Burma, and it is prized for the gold tones in its heartwood (the old wood at the center of the trunk). Other teak heartwoods are more brown.
  • Teak sapwood is yellow-white (younger wood near the edges of the trunk). Carpenters will sometimes try to stain it to look darker. Why? Because extra-valuable heartwood is usually golden-brown or darker. It can also be an aesthetic choice. Just don’t let a carpenter trick you into thinking the teak is rarer than it is.

Weight

  • A solid piece of real teak will usually be heavier than particle board. Compared to other types of wood, teak is moderately heavy, which only contributes to its durability and convenience. Keep in mind that particle board comes in different densities, and heavy density board may feel like the correct weight.

Scent

  • Part of what makes teak so great is its natural oil. This oil repels termites, other pests, and water. It also keeps the wood oiled enough to be durable. Many people describe this scent as leathery. Don’t hesitate to smell the furniture you’re buying to check for this remarkable fragrance.

When you buy teak furniture from AquaTeak, you can rest assured that you are getting authentic teak wood whether you’re investing in a teak bath stool or new shelving.
