Cross-Section of a Teak Tree

12th Dec 2016

Did you know that not all teak is created equal? Depending on where the teak comes from, it may damage more easily, crack faster, and feature plain color. Now, there are different types of teak trees from different places, but within each tree, there are three different types of wood. We want to talk about the different types of teak and where in the tree it comes from.

Grade A Teak

This is the teak we use for AquaTeak furniture and accessories. It’s the most desirable type of teak because its dense grain and high oil content give it incredible durability and waterproofness. It is also prized for its rich golden color. It comes from the center of the teak tree and is called “heartwood”. Because each tree features only 20 percent heartwood, Grade A teak is even more valuable. It’s worth waiting for and that’s a good thing, because a teak tree has to be at least 20 years old to produce mature heartwood that can be harvested. As you would expect, Grade A teak is the most expensive. Expect to pay for the quality. If you encounter teak products that are incredibly cheap, there’s a good chance you’re dealing with inferior product.

Grade A teak can last a lifetime without needing treatment, but you can apply protector to keep its color fresh.

Grade B Teak

This is still heartwood, but it’s younger than the heartwood at the tree’s core. It’s the transition between the old heartwood in the center of the tree and the young sapwood on the outside. While its grain is dense, it isn’t as uniform as Grade A teak. It has less oil than Grade A teak, which means it won’t have the same beautiful gloss. While it can make good furniture, it won’t hold up against the elements and usage as long as Grade A teak. If you invest in Grade B teak, you can maintain it with special sealer or protector. It’s recommended that you treat it once a year.

Grade C Teak

This is the outermost layer of the tree, called the sapwood. This wood is still growing and is responsible for transporting water and nutrients up to the canopy. That means that there’s water instead of oil in the wood, and its grain is far less dense. As a result, it’s far more easily damaged and is not suitable for furniture. It’s easily recognized by its lighter, uneven color. Unscrupulous salespeople sometimes try pass it off as higher-grade wood, so be aware. You’re better off buying pine or synthetic furniture than Grade C teak.
