Bathroom Remodeling Blunders

27th Jul 2017

If you’re looking for teak furniture and accessories for your soon-to-be renovated bathroom, you’ve come to the right place. You won’t find a better selection of high-quality, sustainably-sourced teak bathroom furniture anywhere. But, before you start decorating, you have to finish remodeling, right?

We know that a lot of our customers love their teak bathroom stools, shelves and storage, because they compliment a bathroom design that they already loved. So, we put together some tips to help make your remodeling project go smoothly, so you’ll love your bathroom too!

Sweat the Small Stuff

Don’t assume that you can just make decisions about things like bathroom fans and ventilation at the last minute. This is especially true if you are remodeling a bathroom that doesn’t have any windows for additional ventilation. If your home was built more than 20 years ago, your ventilation system may not be up to code, and to get it up to code, you may need larger ducts and a stronger fan. If you are doing a DIY remodel and don’t know what you need, call in a pro for advice.

Always fix small problems—no exceptions! A small mistake that you let go is going to haunt you for as long as you have to look at it. Tiles that aren’t properly centered, wallpaper that is just a fraction of a millimeter out of alignment, paint strokes that are going in the wrong direction, and vanities or medicine cabinets that are installed just slightly off-center, are all things that you may be willing to overlook because you are anxious to finish your renovation. Don’t give in to temptation. The immediate gratification of completing your project will soon give way to disappointment and frustration over those imperfections that could have been addressed.

Don’t lose focus because you’re tired. This is especially important for the DIYers among you. Your renovation probably took longer, cost more, and put more stress on your relationships than you ever thought it would. You could very well be at the end of your rope, way past the last straw, and beyond your breaking point. The best advice we have for burnout is to not burn out in the first place. Start out at a reasonable pace, starting with the framing of the room through the installation of the final fixtures. Many people will work at a furious pace at the beginning, and be too worn out to make decisions at the end, either leaving those decisions up to someone else, or putting off the completion of their project until they are up to picking it up again.

Be Realistic

What do you need to be realistic about? Good question. Here’s our answer:

  • Space: The amount of space you have is, well, the amount of space you have. If you’re working a 10 x 8 space and think you absolutely must have a double vanity, tub, separate shower and linen closet, you’re going to need to think again. Sure, maybe you can squeeze all of that in, but you’re not going to have much space left to turn around. You’ll have to make some compromises. Either that, or knock out a wall. That opens up a whole new can of worms.
  • Budget: You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get a beautiful bathroom. Decide what the most important thing is to you, make sure you don’t have to compromise on that, and work down your list of budget items from there. You’ll be glad in the end that you got the one thing that you really wanted, and you’ll be surprised how great everything looks even though you stuck to your budget.
  • Your skills: You may think you are really handy, but a bathroom renovation is not the right place to test those skills. You’ll need to properly waterproof your shower and tub enclosures, and that’s a complex multi-step process. If you mess that up, you’re going to have a big mess on your hands. And, remember when we mentioned fixing any small mistakes? You’re going to have a lot more of those to fix if you are doing something yourself that you aren’t quite ready to tackle.

That’s our advice for now. We hope your renovation goes great. One thing we know for sure is that your teak shower bench, shelving, and towel rack from AquaTeak are going to look fantastic!
