Taking Care Of Your Wood Furniture-Part 3
14th Oct 2016
Welcome back! Over the last few days, we’ve been talking about wood furniture, and how to care for it. Proper care is important, and not just to keep it looking good. Perhaps you have a teak shower bench, and it makes showering easier and more convenient. Perhaps you have an oak desk that’s a treasured family heirloom. Along with the practical aspects, there are emotional reasons why we take the time to make our wooden furniture look its best.
Keep reading for a few more easy tips.
- If you have dark spots caused from spills or other damage, simply blot the stain gently using a washcloth dipped in vinegar. This removes the stain completely.
- If you have an older piece, and particularly if it has been in storage for a period of time, the piece can develop an unpleasant odor. One way to remove the stink is by sprinkling baking soda on the surface. Another option is to take the furniture outdoors and let it “air out” in a shaded area. If smells are coming from drawers or cabinets, put a pan of charcoal inside to neutralize the smell.
- Some wooden furniture has a finish that might include a protective coating of wax. Over time, you may need to re-wax the surface to keep it well protected. You should first prepare the surface using steel wool, and scrub with the wood grain. Then, apply a coating of wax with a Scotch Brite Pad. Be sure to apply some pressure and rub the pad with the grain. Ideally, the wax should set for a maximum of 20 minutes. To remove the extra wax, use a clean Scotch Brite pad. Then, buff the area with a clean washcloth until the surface of the wood is smooth.
