Taking Care Of Your Wood Furniture
12th Oct 2016
In many ways, we live in a disposable society. Most of our technology is designed to be thrown away after we upgrade in a few years. We consume most of our media on phones, tablets, or televisions. Even furniture is frequently planned to break down in a relatively short period of time. We think that’s a pity, since we sell teak shower benches that are designed to last for decades.
If you have quality wood furniture, it can last a lifetime if it’s properly taken care of. Keep reading for a few helpful tips.
- For wooden tables and desks, use coasters for glasses and mugs. If you’re putting down hot food, place them on top of a potholder or trivet. Rings caused by cold and heat can do damage to the wood, and reduce the natural beauty of the piece.
- Since wood is organic, it’s vulnerable to a host of organic factors like sunlight and heat. Try not to place tables, chairs, and desks directly in front of uncovered windows, fireplaces, or heating vents. Excessive heat and light can cause fading in the wood.
- Let’s face it, dusting is boring. But as dull as it is, it’s one of the best ways to keep furniture looking good. When too much dust collects, it can create a covering that scratches the wooden surface. Microfiber or soft cotton are great materials since they effectively trap dust.
- If dusting doesn’t keep your wood clean, be sure not to use all-purpose cleaners since they can ruin the finish. Instead, to clean sticky or dirty spots, lightly dip a rag into a mixture of water and a mild dish soap. Wring out as much moisture as possible, then gently wipe the area clean. Rinse the area with a damp cloth, then towel it dry.
